Weekend reading material! Every now and then you have to go back to what is familiar. Regardless of your opinion about his political stance, Leadership by Rudy Giuliani is a great read. Nine years after receiving it as a gift, I still crack it open from time to time. ~ Kim, founder of the Leadership Den
Not every opportunity is for you…but the acknowledgement is what reminds you to keep pushing forward and to let you know you’re on the right path.
#MondayMorningDrive ~ The Pick – Investor, Philanthropist and Businessman Warren Buffett
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.” ~Warren Buffet
The majority of the world probably knows him because of his status as one of the wealthiest people in the world. But outside of his wealth and immensely calculated business/investment decisions and frugal lifestyle, Buffett is equally known for being one of the most giving people in the world. With a net worth in excess of $50 billion, Buffett has pledged (and has already started) giving away 99% of his fortune to charity.
We’re inducting him into our Autobahn Society because of his influence and ability to lead by example in business, philanthropy and life. We thank Warren Buffett for showing that the power is not just about earning money and building your net worth, but it is also in the gift of giving.
The Leadership Den’s chat sessions with emerging leaders will be launching in August 2011.
The purpose of the chat sessions are to discuss issues that have been or can be challenging to our next group of leaders.
Sessions are currently scheduled to be held in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Washington DC and New York City areas.
Interested in joining, please email your contact info to leadershipden [AT] gmail [DOT] com
#NelsonMandelaDay
Nelson Mandela spent 67 years of his life in service to others as a human rights advocate, attorney, prisoner and President of an apartheid free South Africa. The United Nations declared his birthday, July 18, as the Nelson Mandela International Day. In his honor, the United Nations is encouraging all to donate one minute of their life for every year Mr. Mandela served others. On his 93rd birthday, how will you spend your 67 minutes?
#MondayMorningDrive: The Pick!! YOU
Each week, the Leadership Den is committed to highlighting people that inspire emerging leaders under 35 to excel in all of their gifts and talents. While we can and will continue to highlight great leaders each week, we would be remiss if we did not highlight the most important person in our Autobahn Society. That person is YOU!
We celebrate people, places and things so often that we forget to focus on the best person that we can be. Our make-up is so different from everyone else that we must remember that we cannot emulate someone else while being true to ourselves.
We forget to celebrate our accomplishments, both big and small. Our society is so full of celebrating the accomplishments of those that do the biggest and greatest things that we sometimes do not see our contributions and the impact they have on others.
We forget that with each step in our lives to be a better leader is a step towards a larger greatness. Each step, even those that seem to pull us a few steps back, allow us to move towards being the best that each of us can be.
Our hope is that you do not forget to celebrate and recognize your accomplishments. You don’t need an audience to honor that. It can be in your own personal quiet time. Just do it. It will give you the strength and encouragement to continue growing.
So this week, insert YOUR name into our Autobahn Society. We celebrate you, ALONG with you.
Congrats and welcome to our elite society of the #MondayMorningDrive.
#MondayMorningDrive ~ The pick: Beyonce Knowles
By: justkimonline, Founder of The Leadership Den:
I absolutely love this short documentary from Beyonce and thought it was appropriate to share as we start off the work week. Love her or hate her, you can’t deny her amazing talent, drive and leadership skills. Her success is not a game of chance or pure luck. It’s based on a plan that has been well executed by her father. But with all plans, everything needs to be revisited and possibly revised, as we are now seeing as she manages her own career and takes it to the next level.
The lessons in all of this - even as perfectionists and worker bees, we have to remember to “relax, relate and release.” Life can truly be limitless if we allow it to be. But it requires that we stop and live life, enjoy the moments and continue to go for the best. After that regroup and make modifications to your plan as necessary. You only need to prove your worth to yourself!
Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things
New workplace dynamics: Older employees find themselves under rule of younger bosses
What are you experiences in leading an older generation? For our seasoned employees, what have your experiences been working for younger bosses.
We love the article in the NY Daily News by Caroline Kepcher on the new workplace dynamics. Here is an exceprt: “There’s nothing quite like that nervous feeling when you are about to meet the new boss. Everyone involved - including the boss - is hoping to make a great first impression and get down to the real business of learning to work together. Finally, the big moment comes. In walks the new chief, and one thing is immediately clear: You have been in the work force since this person wore diapers.”

#MondayMorningDrive – The pick: Maddie Bradshaw (@m3girldesigns), founder of M3 Girl Designs
…and a child will lead them…
When Maddie was just 10, her hobby of designing magnets for her school locker turned into a business opportunity. The locker magnets became so popular with her friends that they began trading them. Maddie decided that she no longer wanted to limit the magnets to just her locker and the uber popular Snap Caps ® business was born. Snap Caps are unique artistic designs in old fashioned bottle caps that can be worn on a necklace and changed to give a different appearance. Maddie’s designs can be seen on the necks of many school children and even celebrities.
The Texas based M3 Girl Designs is now a multi-million dollar company and sells about 50,000 Snap Caps per month. Wanting to be a positive source to the U.S. economy, all Snap Caps are “made in the USA” by her staff of 17. Even as the business grows, Maddie continues to serve as the designer for the company.
Now 15, Maddie has recently added author to her list of accomplishments with her new book “You Can Start a Business Too” - a guide for other youth interested in starting their own businesses. I’m sure adults wanting to do the same can learn a few things from Maddie and her book as well. :)
We applaud Maddie for her creativity, leadership and drive. The best is yet to come.
